The Ludlow Male Voice Choir is proud to announce the Jon Heyward Mamorial Trust as its Charity of the Year, following a successful recent concert at which the choir presented the Trust with a donation of £250.
Throughout the coming year, all proceeds from the choir's concert raffles will be donated to the Trust, helping to support its valuable work in the local community.
Ludlow Male Voice Choirs Musical Director -Darren Clarke said:
"The Ludlow Male Voice Choir has a long tradition of supporting charities, and we are delighted to make the Jon Hayward Memorial Trust our Charity of the Year. We hope our audiences will join us for what promises to be an enjoyable evening of music while helping us raise even more funds for this wonderful charity."
The choir has an excellent record of charitable fundraising. Last year, its chosen charity was Prostate Cancer UK, with an impressive £1,000 donated thanks to the generosity of concert audiences and supporters.
A note about ‘The Jon Hayward Memorial Trust’.
The Jon Hayward Memorial Trust was established in memory of the late Shropshire folk musician Jon Hayward, whose passion was to inspire young people through music. Since its formation, the Trust has supported more than 200 children in over 40 Shropshire schools by providing means-tested bursaries for music lessons and loans of musical instruments.
Each year, around 30 bursaries are awarded to children who might otherwise be unable to access music education.
The Ludlow Male Voice Choir has a special connection with Jon's legacy. The choir regularly performs "The Southern Most of Dales", a song writen by Jon celebrating the towns, villages and generations of farming families that have shaped the Shropshire landscape.
Steve Dunachie knew Jon and heard him perform the song around the local area including The Unicorn where, over a couple of beers they shared their love for the song.
When Jon passed away in 2006 from cancer Steve asked his widow Sue if he could write an arrangement of Southernmost Of Dales for LMVC.
The piece has become a favourite with both the choir and its audiences. Supporting the Jon Hayward Memorial Trust is therefore a fitting way to honour his contribution to music and to help ensure that future generations have the opportunity to develop their own musical talents.
